Throughout antiquity as far as the end of the Middle Ages the “throne” was reserved exclusively for people of power, in other words: emperors, kings, popes and chieftains. Only rulers took up an elevated position, in every sense of the word, on a seat, while it was usual for all others to settle down on the floor. The democratisation of the chair – as we know it today – progressed slowly and step by step: First, chairs were introduced for general use in places of worldly and spiritual power, i.e. in manor houses and monasteries. From about the 16th century, the burgeoning merchant classes and bourgeoisie borrowed this custom from the nobility and clergy and began to introduce the chair as household furniture. Since then it has become hard to imagine our lives being the same without the chair. And life would certainly not be the same without chairs from the Rolf Benz collection. For more than ten years now, the company has been moving on in every aspect of “tables and chairs”. The starting point was the chair – sumptuously upholstered using every trick in the book – how could it be any other way, at a company steeped in tradition that has been dealing in upholstered furniture for more than 45 years and reached an extraordinary level of perfection. Since then it has been the mission of Rolf Benz to turn a good meal, for example, into a perfect dining experience by offering extremely comfortable, yet skilfully designed seating. This tradition is being carried on in the shape of the new Rolf Benz 610 chair designed by the Renzler Jahnz studio. The chair, which is characterised by the striking alternation of convex and concave lines, is noticeable above all for its particular construction: Stretched over the bent tubular steel frame – available in options of bright chrome, matt chrome or black chromed finish – is a highly contemporary, elasticated fabric cover. For optimum comfort, additional soft padding is incorporated into the seat.
