The new Rolf Benz 8830 dining table, with its 40 millimetre-thick solid
wooden table top that stands on slightly curved aluminium pedestals, is
an impressive sight. Designer Norbert Beck has created the
permanently-displayed table top in a dynamic, rustic look that creates
an equally dynamic contrast to the modern aluminium pedestals. To create
a particularly authentic appearance, the table top is oiled, giving it a
silky, smooth surface that enhances the table’’s haptic appeal.
The elm wood used has a very lively grain in warm shades of brown. The
solid table top, with the dynamic interplay of light and dark surfaces,
as well as the smoothing-off of larger knots, looks very old, even
almost ancient. In combination with the aluminium pedestals, the effect
is highly modern. Other types of wood available include oak, stained in
accordance with the Rolf Benz stain chart, as well as American walnut.
